An honest reflection on cultural identify, class, and gentrification. Fans of Nic Stone and Elizabeth Acevedo will eagerly anticipate Torrey.
On the day Torrey officially becomes a college freshman, he gets a call that might force him to drop out before he’s even made it through orientation: the bee farm his beloved uncle Miles left him after his tragic death is being foreclosed on.
Torrey would love nothing more than to leave behind the family and neighborhood that’s bleeding him dry. But he still feels compelled to care for the project of his uncle’s heart. As the farm heads for auction, Torrey precariously balances choosing a major and texting Gabriel—the first boy he ever kissed—with the fight to stop his uncle’s legacy from being demolished. But as notice letters pile up and lawyers appear at his dorm, dividing himself between family and future becomes impossible unless he sacrifices a part of himself.
I could totally relate to this novel…
We have all been in experiences where we literally have felt like the world was crashing down around us. Like no matter what we did, the world was intent on not seeing us move forward despite our best efforts and potential ensuing vulnerabilities.
It is also hard when you are trying to move forward, but your old world keeps holding you back. I feel like Torrey was experiencing this same sort of turmoil. Not only was he trying to figure out who he was in the world and start new in college, but he was also having to face the destruction of the world he tried to leave behind.
I feel as though we all reach stages in our lives where we need to make tough decisions that could have the potential to heal us or bring us further away from where we originally even started. Torrey was in this same predicament as he had to balance the crumbling aspects of the world he knew with attempts to set new footing. This sort of struggle can be a hard bargain.
This brings me to say how I really did enjoy this novel. It caused me to self-reflect and figure my way through the things that bother me the most and how I intend to grow past. A novel that allows me to acknowledge and reason with the light and dark within myself is one that makes for a stunning read.
I look forward to reading more of Montgomery’s work!
