>> Synopsis:

When Lena’s younger sister Fressa is found dead, their whole Viking clan mourns—but it is Lena alone who never recovers. Fressa is the sister that should’ve lived, and Lena cannot rest until she knows exactly what killed Fressa and why—and how to bring her back. She strikes a dark deal with Hela, the Norse goddess of death, and begins a new double life to save her sister.
But as Lena gets closer to bringing Fressa back, she dredges up dangerous discoveries about her own family, and finds herself in the middle of a devastating plan to spur Ragnarök –a deadly chain of events leading to total world destruction.
Still, with her sister’s life in the balance, Lena is willing to risk it all. She’s willing to kill. How far will she go before the darkness consumes her?

> Q&A with Elizabeth <

To All The Books I’ve Read Before: What was your inspiration behind writing this novel?
Elizabeth: I felt really inspired by the darkness and intricacy of the Norse myths for sure—I still feel like I’ve hardly scratched the surface of the trove of stories there. I wanted to interact with that environment and how the inevitability of Ragnarok might weigh upon regular humans. That, combined with my hopes of writing a sister-centric story for years, fell together in a way that felt natural and meaningful. The characters really took the reins, and I felt like I was just along for the ride!
To All The Books I’ve Read Before: What is one thing that you hope for your readers to take away from reading this novel?
Elizabeth: I hope that those who read The Weight of a Soul will reckon with how far they’d go to get what they want, and what their “point of no return” might be—Lena comes up against massive, inescapable forces and obstacles and keeps going. Is she right to do so? I hope that by following Lena’s journey in this story, readers will think about how far is too far when it comes to protecting our loved ones, and what it means to be a good family member, friend, and community member.
To All The Books I’ve Read Before: Create a book trailer utilizing 5 sentences describing why someone should read your novel.
Elizabeth: When Lena’s younger sister is found dead, nothing seems right. Lena refuses to accept it, and ends up forging a deal with the goddess of death and facing impending doomsday. If you’re looking for a story that interweaves Viking history and Norse mythology, try The Weight of a Soul. How far will Lena go before the darkness becomes a part of her? Is there a way back to the light?
